Invitation to JOIN the All-Ukrainian initiative “For a peaceful protest!”

The All-Ukrainian Initiative “For Peaceful Protest!” is a non-governmental, non-partisan public movement that was formed in 2011 and has already united around itself public activists and a coalition of 98 organizations that have been dealing with the issue of peaceful assemblies or exercising the right to protest for many years. The initiative’s activists have collected more than 18 thousand signatures in defense of freedom of peaceful assemblies in Ukraine, and have already held dozens of round tables in the country’s regional centers, starting a dialogue with the authorities on the importance of people’s fundamental right to peaceful assemblies.

The following actions are already being implemented within the framework of the Initiative:

– prompt response to restrictions on the freedom of peaceful assembly at the local level – repression by law enforcement agencies, decisions by local authorities that restrict human rights, etc. Appealing against unconstitutional provisions of local authorities on the procedure for holding rallies, pickets and demonstrations and unjust court decisions banning peaceful assemblies;

– conducting educational events for public activists on the topic of protecting the right to exercise freedom of peaceful assembly (schools, trainings, lectures). Promoting the value of peaceful actions to protect public interests;

– establishing a dialogue on the topic of protecting freedom of peaceful assembly with representatives of the authorities, law enforcement agencies and judges (dozens of round tables have already been held). Providing expert support to the authorities of Ukraine;

– collecting signatures in defense of freedom of peaceful assembly in Ukraine under a petition to the authorities (more than 18 thousand signatures have been collected; signatures are also collected online – );

– monitoring of all protest actions in Ukraine and repression by the authorities against them;

– constant monitoring of any legislative initiatives in the field of peaceful assembly;

– blocking legislative initiatives that threaten freedom of peaceful assembly;

– work on developing and lobbying for draft laws and amendments to laws on freedom of assembly, which would provide a democratic mechanism for regulating their conduct (the initiative’s experts developed draft law No. 7819, worked in the Working Group on finalizing draft law No. 2450 and developing draft law No. 10569);

– holding international solidarity actions and building a public international network to protect the freedom of peaceful assembly.
