In Snovsk, Chernihiv region, ways to overcome domestic violence in communities were discussed

Combating domestic violence and child abuse should be a priority for every executive body, local government, or public organization today. That is why on February 11, 2019, a roundtable discussion on the topic “Combating violence and child abuse in the community” was held in the city of Snovsk, Chernihiv region, at the Snovsk District State Administration.

Representatives of the Snovsk Regional State Administration, Snovsk City Council, the Children’s Service and the Department of Family, Youth, and Sports of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, the Chernihiv Regional Center for Social Services for Family, Children, and Youth, and the Juvenile Prevention Department of the Main Department of National Police in Chernihiv region took part in the event.

During the round table, the issues of interaction between all responsible entities, high-quality assistance to victims, and the issue of information exchange about such cases in accordance with current legislation were discussed, i.e. if it concerns a child, the police and the Children’s Service should be informed within 24 hours.

Yulia Olyfirenko, Deputy Head of the Children’s Service of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, emphasized the importance of conducting preventive work with children in educational institutions so that children know their rights and the possibilities of seeking help. For this purpose, the regional service provided educational institutions with memos with the hotline number, where not only children but also adults can seek help.

During the round table, representatives of the Chernihiv Public Committee for the Protection of Human Rights emphasized that employees of the authorized bodies of the National Police are obliged to immediately respond to the call and, upon clarification of all circumstances, draw up a protocol on an administrative offense against the offender. Therefore, all structures should be interested in such an outcome, and therefore all cases should be kept under control.

The participants of the round table agreed that it is better to solve problems together with all responsible structures, and therefore it is necessary to gather more often at the round table to discuss problems in a preventive direction in order to work with families in advance and prevent violence in families.

The event was organized by the Chernihiv Public Committee for the Protection of Human Rights within the framework of the project “Strengthening the Legal Capacity of Communities in the Chernihiv Region” with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation
