Ombudsman monitors have confirmed the successful implementation of children’s rights to education in the Chernihiv boarding school

Employees of the Department for the Implementation of the National Preventive Mechanism of the Commissioner’s Secretariat, together with public monitors, conducted a monitoring visit to the Chernihiv Comprehensive Boarding School of I-III Degrees named after M. Kotsiubynsky.

The boarding school ensures the realization of the right of children in need of social assistance to general secondary education. At the time of the visit, 223 children studied and lived at the school, of which 11 were orphans and 3 children under guardianship.

In general, the school has good conditions for children’s education and living. The monitors visited the educational and residential buildings, the catering unit, the sports hall and the recreation rooms. It is worth noting that most of the students of the institution are involved in sports, the boarding school has its own football team. There is also a separate hall for weightlifting. Graduates of the school enter prestigious higher educational institutions, and also continue to engage in professional sports. Among them are famous athletes, such as Dmitry Mitrofanov (European boxing champion).

It should be noted that the emotional state of the children in the institution is very positive. The monitoring group talked to students of different grades, starting with the “first graders”. Interviews were conducted both individually and with groups of children in the absence of teachers and administration. There were practically no complaints, the children complained only about the early dismissal and the lack of drinking water in the living rooms.

It should be noted that the management of the boarding school actively cooperated with the monitors, did not interfere with their work and took note of all comments.

The employees of the Department for the Implementation of the National Preventive Mechanism will prepare the relevant response acts of the Commissioner for Human Rights.
