ATTACK ON A REFUGEE
But, after 3 days in a temporary detention center, our “humane” justice released the “nationally conscious” attacker on a recognizance not to leave. The attacker’s relatives and friends tried to threaten the Chechen family, sending unknown people, even with weapons, offering to “sit quietly” or even “go to Chechnya.” Currently, the investigation is ongoing. A criminal case has been opened under Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (“Causing serious bodily harm”).
The Chechen family settled in Chernihiv in the mid-90s during the first Chechen war, having officially received refugee status in Ukraine. During 2004-2005, at the height of the second Chechen campaign, family members repeatedly turned to the Chernihiv Public Committee for Human Rights Protection for help due to constant threats and insults from local residents and even accusations of “connections with militants.” And now the family has another tragedy.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees provided medical assistance to the victim. Legal assistance is provided by the Chernihiv Public Committee for Human Rights Protection.
