A public reception center of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union operates in Chernihiv

The Ukrainian Helsinki Union for Human Rights (UHHRU) public reception center operates on the basis of the Chernihiv Public Committee for the Protection of Human Rights to provide free legal assistance to citizens.

The main goal is to provide not only legal advice, but also to strengthen legal opportunities, to teach people to defend their rights themselves. The emphasis in the work of the reception center is on the protection of human rights and freedoms in relations with state authorities and local self-government bodies. The priority is free legal assistance to vulnerable categories of citizens: pensioners, the unemployed, the disabled, residents of rural areas, victims of domestic violence, etc. After all, usually these people do not have the opportunity to defend their rights in government bodies, in particular in court. Not everyone can use the services of a professional lawyer.

In addition to providing advisory services, the UHHRU reception offices in Ukraine carry out analytical and information activities. This involves analyzing the causes of human rights violations and ways to prevent them. It is planned to disseminate knowledge about human rights and means of human rights protection: training for public activists, publishing educational materials, conducting information campaigns in the media, demonstrating successful precedents in the protection of human rights, establishing dialogue and cooperation with state law enforcement agencies.

In particular, within the framework of the work of

the UHHRU Strategic Cases Fund

it is possible to fully or partially pay for the cost of providing legal services to victims of human rights violations in cases of strategic importance. Cases that change administrative or judicial practice, change legislation or are aimed at protecting rights and freedoms, when these violations are of a massive or brutal nature, are of strategic importance.
