EUROPEAN WEEK AGAINST RACISM

However, so far no clear reaction has been received from law enforcement agencies and government structures to these events: extremist movements continue to function, the city of Chernihiv is filled with fascist “graffiti”, calls for the oppression of migrants are becoming louder.

All of the above in a civilized European society should cause active actions by the authorities to stop extremism, but so far we have not observed this.

As part of the week of action against racism, the Chernihiv Public Committee for the Protection of Human Rights, together with the Assistant to the Minister of Internal Affairs for Human Rights in the Chernihiv region, held several actions. In particular, classes were held on this topic in the system of in-service training of police officers, a visit was made to the Center for Temporary Residence of Foreigners in the village of Rozsudiv, Chernihiv region, where interviews were conducted with detained migrants.

The Chernihiv Public Committee for the Protection of Human Rights, welcoming the initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine to hold a week of combating racism, appeals to representatives of state authorities, in particular to law enforcement agencies, with the requirement:

to increase preventive work to combat racism, intolerance and xenophobia in the region;

to begin real work to stop the activities of extremist movements in the region, which are the source of many criminal crimes;

to separate in their approaches to public actions of socio-political movements freedom of expression from the open promotion of racism, intolerance and xenophobia, taking appropriate measures provided for by the legislation of Ukraine;

to truly protect vulnerable groups and minorities living in the region.
