Human rights defenders on guard to protect media rights in times of war

On October 14, Chernihiv hosted an intensive offline training “Journalism of the Future: Law, Protection and AI” for local journalists and representatives of civil society organizations, organized by the Center for Democracy and Rule of Law (CEDEM) and the Regional Hub of the Institute of Mass Information “Mediabase Chernihiv”.

As part of the event, we presented the activities of the project “Legal Community and Local Media: Partnership to Protect Freedom of Speech”, which is implemented in cooperation with the All-Ukrainian Coalition for Legal Aid with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

In the current security situation in the Chernihiv region, cooperation with lawyers is becoming critically important. Journalists and civil society activists should have access to legal assistance to ensure timely and effective communication in risky situations. This helps preserve freedom of expression and helps avoid legal problems related to their activities.

Key issues that may require legal support:

– legal organization of professional activities of journalists, media and bloggers

– issues of illegal pressure, restrictions by law enforcement agencies

– work with personal data

– liability for content published on blogs, social networks or on YouTube

– obstruction of journalistic activities

– maintaining the confidentiality of sources of information

– compliance with legislation on fake news, hate speech and calls for violence

– rules for labeling advertising content, in particular on a blog or on YouTube

– registration of media outlets, – other aspects of daily work.
