HUMAN RIGHTS IN BELARUS


Among the topics considered within the school: human rights and democracy, the right to a fair trial, actions of non-governmental organizations to protect public interests, cooperation of non-governmental organizations with the judicial system, experience in the development of democracy and human rights in Ukraine, etc. Given the school’s focus on maximum involvement of Ukrainian and Belarusian specialists with practical experience in building civil society, the following teachers acted as teachers of the school: Oleksandr Demchenko – judge of the Court of Appeal of Chernihiv region, Harry Pohonyaylo – head of the legal commission of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee,

Kateryna Tarasova – head of the Judicial Association of Ukraine “Foundation for the Promotion of Justice”.


The school participants were particularly interested in the program of visits to the central bodies of the judicial branch of Ukraine

, organized by the Judicial Association of Ukraine “Foundation for the Promotion of Justice”

. Belarusian human rights defenders had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the work of the Council of Judges of Ukraine and the Supreme Court of Ukraine, which was presented by judges of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, Deputy Chairmen of the Council of Judges of Ukraine Vasyl Gumenyuk and Oleksandr Volkov.

They spoke about the current state of reform of the Ukrainian judiciary and the current work of Ukrainian courts. The guests also visited the Council of Europe Information Office in Ukraine.




This event is the second in a three-year project supported by the European Commission, which involves promoting the development of civil society in the Republic of Belarus and developing cooperation between the third sector of this country and Ukrainian colleagues.
