Representatives of the Ombudsman checked the state of observance of the rights of children with disabilities in the Nizhyn boarding house

As part of the activities of the national preventive mechanism, a monitoring visit was carried out to the Nizhyn orphanage by the regional coordinator for public relations of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in Chernihiv region Alla Lepekha and the head of the Chernihiv Public Committee for the Protection of Human Rights Viktor Tarasov.

The orphanage houses children with mental and physical disabilities, who suffer from cerebral palsy. The total number of residents at the time of monitoring was 107 people, including 33 children aged 4 to 18. The orphanage has residents up to 35 years old.

Overall, the institution made a positive impression. The territory is tidy, clean, equipped with playgrounds and walking areas. The premises are equipped with equipment and furniture according to their purpose. The boarding house has a medical department, which allows the residents to receive appropriate medical services in the institution. Well-organized health and other types of rehabilitation work, taking into account the health status and age of the residents. This was made possible thanks to the attention of the staff and significant assistance from benefactors. Members of the monitoring group had the opportunity to attend classes with the residents and talk to them.

During individual conversations between members of the monitoring group and the residents of the boarding house, no complaints were received about living conditions and poor treatment by the staff. Only a few adult residents over twenty years of age reported insufficient nutrition.
