SOCIAL PROTECTION

As noted

Viktor Tarasov

, executive director of the Chernihiv Public Committee for the Protection of Human Rights: “Millions of our citizens are forced to defend their right to social protection both in court and on the street, during protests. This indicates the need for urgent reform of the system of providing benefits in the state and the implementation of a well-thought-out state social policy. The media and non-governmental organizations cannot remain aloof from this process.”

The justice system also plays a significant role in the legal education of the population, as reported by the chief specialist of the Chernihiv City Department of Justice

Diana Kravchenko

. She gave examples of problems with the implementation of court decisions in “social” cases and proposed effective algorithms for their resolution.

Judge of the Court of Appeal of Chernihiv Region

Oleksandr Demchenko

gave examples from the practice of the European Court of Human Rights on the protection of the rights of journalists and freedom of speech. Commenting on the specifics of the work of journalists within the framework of the law “On Access to Public Information”, the judge notes the still insufficient practice of implementing this law. Although, in his opinion, domestic legislation currently gives journalists quite broad powers to convey to the reader, listener or viewer objective, unbiased information about certain events in socio-political life.

In the end

Viktor Tarasov

called on journalists, as representatives of a truly “fourth” branch of government, to pay more attention to covering urgent problems of compliance with social rights of citizens and legal education of readers in their publications.

The event was held by the Chernihiv Public Committee for the Protection of Human Rights together with the Department of Press and Information of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration with the support of the project “Development of Civil Society”, implemented by the United Nations Development Program in Ukraine.
